“Triskel” gives name to Rosinha’s third album. The etymology of the Greek word we today use, triskelion, is original from the Celtic culture, meaning three-legged. Its symbol materialises in three lines that curl in a spiral from a common centre, forming a rosette. The movement created by the union of these threads refers to the idea of cycle, action and progression, also leading to the balance of the three fundamental elements of the Celtic culture: Earth, Water and Air; evoking as well the divine interaction between Body, Mind and Soul. It is from this symbolic trinity of complement that the trio presents itself.
Thereupon, the album “Triskel” naturally arises as an evolution of the project “Árvore” [Tree], that allowed the group to musically get to know each other and to increasingly create a more and more coherent and mature language. Now breaking through new territories, the repertoire of this new album is entirely of Rosinha’s authorship, specially designed to be interpreted by João Paulo Esteves da Silva on the piano, Marcos Cavaleiro on the drums and, of course, André Rosinha himself on the double bass. Having all the trio’s potential in mind and better understanding their dynamics, the themes were deeply worked on a compositional level, with some elegant ostinatos on the way, still preserving the so important space for free improvisation. “Triskel” maintains the attention to melody, this time also exploring the bow on the double bass and more unison moments between piano and strings. Some of the same influences used on the last album are kept, yet emphasising classical music and the lyric aesthetic of European jazz.
After the success and recognition of “Árvore”, it makes sense to expand and go on developing André Rosinha’s trio musical affinities.
